Tribal Farming Initiative: Expanding Agricultural Growth
For the second year, SWO has approved custom farm contracts under the Realty Department, following a successful first year. This historic initiative has enabled SWO to plant acres of crops, advancing Tribal agriculture and sovereignty.
The Tribal Council and Executives are working towards a 50/50 crop share agreement again but have yet to finalize terms with an operator. This year marks the first time SWO will be planting 500 acres of crops.
To support this initiative:
✔ CHS in Sisseton has been contracted to provide seeds, chemicals, fertilizers, spraying, and application.
✔ The long-term goal is to establish a for-profit farming business, allowing greater operational flexibility.
✔ The Tribal Realty Department continues to dedicate time and resources to ensure a successful planting season that boosts profitability and Tribal sovereignty.

Community Garden Expansion: Wote Hdapi Kte Sni Cooperative
In Spring 2024, SWO was awarded a $10,000 mini-grant from Partnerships with Native Americans (PWNA) to launch a new community garden. The garden, named Wote Hdapi Kte Sni Cooperative, honors the women who have dedicated their lives to Tribal health and human services.
Tribal Council and Executives have approved 7.5 acres on Two Star Lane for this initiative, providing a permanent solution to rising food prices and emergency food shortages.
Funding & Support:
✔ PWNA Grant ($10,000) for initial development
✔ Feeding SD Grant ($278,000) to expand the project
✔ Rhonda and Doris leading efforts in food preservation and gardening education
